When we think of the desert, we often envision an expanse of barren land, vast sand dunes, and the unmistakable sound of silence. Yet, Ocotillo Wells, with its unique desert landscapes, recently transformed our perception entirely, and all thanks to JD Fabrication. They didn’t just give us an introduction to the exhilarating world of Prerunners; they catapulted us straight into its heart.

JD Fabrication, renowned for their expertise and passion for off-road vehicles, graciously extended an invitation to us for an adrenaline-pumping adventure in the Ocotillo Wells desert. Eager and excited, we embarked on what was to become our very first genuine Prerunner experience. To say our minds were blown would be a sheer understatement.

A Fleet of Powerhouses

For those unfamiliar, Prerunners are trucks or SUVs specifically modified for desert racing and recon runs. They’re not just regular vehicles; they’re beasts, designed to handle the toughest terrains while maintaining high speeds. At Ocotillo Wells, we were introduced to a fleet of these beasts.

First in line were a couple of Toyota Tacomas. From a distance, you might mistake them for regular pickups, but up close, their modifications and enhancements are undeniable. Their roar, agility, and power set them miles apart from their city counterparts.

However, the star of the show was the super unique Trekker. This isn’t a vehicle you come across every day. It’s rare, it’s distinctive, and it’s an absolute marvel of engineering. Riding in the Trekker was like entering a different dimension, one where the desert was a playground, and every dune or rocky patch was just another fun obstacle to overcome.

Adding to the ensemble were a Ford F-150 and Ranger. Though both started their lives as standard models, what stood before us at Ocotillo Wells were far from their original selves. The phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” took on a new meaning. These Prerunners were stripped of many of their original parts and refashioned into machines that could withstand and relish the rigors of desert terrains.

Suspension and Power – The Prerunner Mantra

Two things immediately stood out about these vehicles: their impressive suspension travel and the big LS power. The tons of suspension travel meant that these vehicles could glide over rough terrains, absorbing shocks that would normally cripple standard trucks. It’s this suspension that enables Prerunners to treat the desert as both a racetrack and a dance floor. The dance of wheels and sand, as they float over dunes and navigate rocky terrains, is a sight to behold.
